Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation announces several additions to the Baffinland team charged with advancing the Company’s world class Mary River iron ore deposits to development. Since Rod Cooper, P. Eng., Vice President Operations and COO, and Rob Chausse, C.A., Vice President and CFO, joined the Company in March 2006, Baffinland management has successfully recruited additional key members to the team. “These people are technical, operations, financial and administrative professionals that are highly regarded in their respective disciplines and each of them fully understands the potential significance of the successful development of Baffinland’s Mary River Project,” stated Richard (Bo) McCloskey, Chairman of Baffinland.
The new additions to the team include two new officers of the Company who joined Baffinland late in the first quarter of 2007. Derek Chubb, P. Eng., Vice President Sustainable Development, has many years of experience in sustainable development, environment permitting and compliance, including BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc. involved with the Ekati Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories and most recently Suncor Energy Inc. in the oil sands of northern Alberta. Derek will develop, execute and manage Baffinland’s permitting strategy, as well as develop the corporate strategy for sustainable development. Sonya Stark brings many years of experience in corporate governance, compliance and as Corporate Secretary of public corporations and has joined Baffinland as Vice President and Corporate Secretary. Most recently she was with Tiberon Minerals Ltd., a formerly TSX listed mineral company acquired in 2007 by a foreign firm. Sonya replaces Ed Dumond, Corporate Secretary for Baffinland’s formative years, who is retiring from Baffinland to focus on his other activities. Gord McCreary, President and CEO of Baffinland, stated “We sincerely thank Ed for his diligence over the years on behalf of Baffinland and wish him all the best in his future activities.”
In the fourth quarter of 2006, Baffinland added key skills in the areas of human resources and procurement with the addition of Len Kutchaw, Director Human Resources/Health and Safety, and David Alexander, Procurement Manager. Len and David are seasoned professionals in their chosen disciplines and have worked extensively in operating environments in mining and forest products, respectively. Len has held senior positions with several mining companies, most recently with Goldcorp’s Red Lake Operations. David has held senior procurement positions with several companies, most recently with Louisiana-Pacific Canada Ltd.
In late March and early April, Baffinland has also added further operations management skills with new team members Al Gorman, Operations Manager, and Dave McCann, P. Eng., Assistant Operations Manager. Al has an extensive background in mine operations in Canada and abroad, most recently as Mine Manager of an open pit mining operation with Century Mining Corporation. He will manage all activities at the Mary River Project, including contractor management, safety and environmental stewardship and all site logistics. Dave has a strong operating background in mineral processing and project management. He will assist with managing the Mary River Project, as well as work on various engineering and operations activities associated with the advancement of the Mary River Project. Dave has been working in senior management roles, for several years, most recently with CVRD Inco based in Sudbury.
Sean Maloney has also joined the Baffinland team from his home base in Iqaluit, Nunavut Territory, as Business Development Officer. Sean is a long time Nunavut resident and has experience as economic development officer of northern communities. Ultimately Baffinland intends to open community liaison offices in several Nunavut communities staffed by local part-time personnel to provide information about Baffinland and the Mary River Project. In addition, three Baffinland contract employees from 2006 have also recently become Baffinland employees in technical and financial roles. Ahoora Samiei and Massoud Robatian, contract geologists from our 2006 field season became full-time Baffinland Project Geologists recently. In their Mary River focused exploration and geological roles with Baffinland, they will continue to work closely with original core members of the Baffinland team, Michael Zurowski, P. Eng., Executive Vice President, Roland Landry, Project Manager, and Dr. Tom Iannelli, Principal Geologist. Also in the important financial control function, Vesna Zagmester, our Corporate Accountant, has converted from a part-time contract in 2006 to a Baffinland employee in 2007.
Although most of the Baffinland team members mentioned are based in the head office in Toronto, many are focused on activities on site at Mary River on Baffin Island. A few of the new team members are based in other locations such as Montreal, Iqaluit and Pond Inlet in order to perform their functions more efficiently for Baffinland.
“We have long had the confidence that our Mary River Project would eventually be recognized as a world class iron ore project. We also felt that the ultimate challenge would be to build the team needed to advance our project to development for the benefit of all of our stakeholders. With this announcement we have made a major step forward in this regard and we will continue to add additional skills as necessary to accomplish our objectives,” concluded Gord McCreary.
“Our World Class Project …Our World Class Team”
