Greenpeace activists dumped 200 kilos of coal at the entrance of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Thursday and unfurled a banner with the message “Atienza, don’t be a climate criminal.”

North Dakota and Montana have an estimated 3.0 to 4.3 billion barrels of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil in an area known as the Bakken Formation.

A shale formation under western North Dakota holds the biggest continuous oil deposit in the lower 48 states, the U.S. Geographical Survey has determined.
