Dollar Mixed, Gold Up in Europe Trading

The dollar was mostly higher against other major currencies in European trading Thursday morning. Gold prices rose sharply.
The euro traded at $1.3090, down from $1.3143 late Wednesday in New York.
Other dollar rates:

Gold miner Newmont’s quarterly profit soars

Newmont Mining Corp., the world’s second-largest gold producer, said on Thursday that fourth-quarter profit more than tripled on much higher gold prices.
Net earnings were $223 million, or 49 cents per share, compared with $62 million, or 14 cents per share, a year earlier, the Denver-based mining company said.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda has sought a fortnight from Arcelor Mittal Steel to settle the issue of iron ore supply. Jharkhand is unable to meet the steel giant’s demand of 600 million tonnes of iron ore for 30 years to set up a 12 million tonne steel plant.

Barrick Gold Corp., the world’s largest gold producer, said fourth-quarter profit more than doubled as prices climbed, and acquisitions and new mines boosted production.
